In December of 2000 Calvary Chapel Hilo was encouraged by a pastor on the east coast with an interest in radio to pray about an opportunity to apply for a construction permit for a low power fm station. The permit for KIHL was granted in January 2003, with the FCC requirement that the station be built within 18 months.
The funds to build the station were donated by individuals in the church as well as other
Calvary Chapels who were happy to contribute. Many volunteers from Calvary Chapel Hilo donated their time to do the work needed to set up the station. Radio professionals from all over the country were very generous in donating their time to give guidance.
KCIF was very gracious in helping to get KIHL on the air.
The station began running out of a closet at a school with the antenna on top of the building at 72 ft. A year later the antenna was moved to 1000ft elevation, doubling the coverage area. The frequency was moved from 103.3 to 103.7 to avoid interference.
In the fall of 2006 KIHL applied for a full power station in order to have a permanent locationand reach a larger audience.
KIHL is now available on streaming internet through the Calvary Chapel website.
KIHL has created websites for the station as well as SouledOut Radio. A Heavenly Jazz website is planned.
KIHL 103.7 is operated by volunteers and provides news, local programming, and public service announcements for the benefit of our community. Our goal is to continue to improve the quality of service and provide a diverse selection of music and programming to the community.
